I love variety, which is one of the reasons why I like food – food that fills my tummy and also brain food that tickles my intellectual palate. Good food inspires good chat and it is as important to be mindful of what food you put into your mouth as what you feed to your brain.
Food has continuously been a source of fun and comfort. I like playing with food, literally, ever since I was small - digging wells in buns (饅頭) and pouring congee into them, making small hills with the rice in the big rice bucket at home, drawing clown faces on a plate with the leftover glossy cherry and other bits from a mango pudding…Having grown up a bit, I am still playing with food, only making bigger and grander mess.
Growing up to be an adult, it seems inevitable that one has to do more and more things because one “should” and I find myself falling deeper and deeper into this sad trap, too. Seldom can I do something any more just for the sheer enjoyment of doing it, with no agenda, no expectation and no pressure. Baking is one of those lovely exceptions and may just provide me with the route to escape from this trap.
